A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dele
Momodu, has suggested that a formidable candidate from the North can
effectively counter President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Momodu noted that the North is strategic in the presidential
election, adding that the region feels marginalized under Tinubu’s
administration.
Featuring on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the former PDP
presidential aspirant said marginalization could inflame Northern voters
against the ruling government.
He described Nigerian politics as an “optical illusion—much like magic, the more you look, the less you see”.
According to Momodu: “I believe Tinubu can only be
effectively countered by another strong candidate from the North.
“Any Southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is
likely wasting their time. The PDP—or any coalition—must recognise that power
dynamics require strategic thinking.
“They cannot expect success with a Southern candidate alone
if they truly wish to contest Tinubu’s position.”
The veteran publisher also stressed the importance of
coalition politics, noting that a united front—including influential Northern
figures like Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso—could bolster the opposition’s chances.
This comes as a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs
to Tinubu in the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed,
said the North will soon decide its political direction.
Baba-Ahmed charged Tinubu to step aside and allow a new
generation of leaders preside over the country.
