The Nigerian government has confirmed that there were no shortfalls in salaries paid to federal civil servants in January and February 2025.
The spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of
the Federation, OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, made this clarification in a statement on
Friday.
This follows reports suggesting that the government had
experienced salary shortfalls in recent months.
However, Mokwa explained that workers received their regular
salaries in January and February 2025 after various arrears paid between
October and December 2024 had been exhausted.
He stressed the need to clarify the purported shortfall to
dispel any anxiety among workers.
“Various salary arrears were paid in the last quarter of
2024, including minimum wage arrears, a 25 per cent and 35 per cent increase in
salary arrears, and wage award arrears. All these arrears were paid from
October to December 2024, causing salaries to increase abnormally during that
period,” he stated.
“Payment of normal salaries resumed in January 2025 after
the exhaustion of these arrears. This led some workers to believe they had been
shortchanged when, in reality, they were receiving their actual salaries. A
glance at the current salary table will further substantiate this.”
The OAGF added that, unless additional salary arrears arise
in the future, the amounts paid in January and February 2025 will remain
unchanged until the Federal Government reviews salaries.
Furthermore, the OAGF noted that some workers were overpaid
in December 2024 due to a system error. The error has since been corrected, and
deductions to recover the overpaid amounts are ongoing and will continue until
full recovery is achieved.
Regarding the payment of promotion arrears, the OAGF
explained that this process is managed by a Standing Committee on Promotion and
Salary Arrears within the Budget Office of the Federation. The committee
compiles and verifies salary and promotion arrears from various ministries,
departments, and agencies before forwarding them in batches to the Integrated
Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, for payment.
The OAGF confirmed that IPPIS has fully paid batches 1 to 6
and is awaiting further batches from the Budget Office of the Federation for
processing.
