FAAN temporarily closes runway at Lagos airport for rehabilitation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says runway 18R/36L at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos will be temporarily closed for rehabilitation.

In a statement on Sunday, Obiageli Orah, director of public affairs and consumer protection, said the rehabilitation work is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the runway remains in optimal condition.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that there would be a temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos from the 03:00Hrs of 3rd of March 2025 23:59Hrs of 4th March 2025,” the statement reads.

“The closure is due to ongoing rehabilitation work (asphalt phase) at the A2 Taxiway-link of the runway.”

Orah assured that flight operations will not be disrupted, as all flights will be redirected to the alternative runway 18L/36R during the period.

The director reiterated the authority’s commitment to its core values of safety, security, and passenger comfort.

On January 15, Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN’s managing director, said N580 billion is needed to fix airport runways across the country.

Speaking on the state of airport facilities, Kuku said many runways have exceeded their lifespan, necessitating urgent reconstruction.
