The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted an indirect primary to select the party’s flagbearer in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled
the state governorship election for November 8.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday at the end of
the party’s national working committee (NWC) meeting, Ajibola Basiru, the APC
national secretary, said the indirect primary was adopted to ensure a more
inclusive and streamlined process.
“At the NWC today, it was formally decided that the mode of
emergence of the candidate for the Anambra governorship election will be
through the indirect primary,” Basiru said.
“This decision was made to carry along all stakeholders and
ensure a transparent process.”
He clarified that earlier advertisements suggesting a direct
primary mode were misleading, noting that no formal resolution was made before
the meeting.
He said the party has scheduled a stakeholders’ meeting for
next Tuesday at 1 pm at the national headquarters.
He added that the meeting will include members of the
Anambra state working committee, the state caucus, and all aspirants vying for
the party’s ticket.
Bashiru also revealed that the APC will communicate its
decision to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and launch
supplementary advertisements and public sensitisation campaigns to inform party
members and the general public about the mode of the primary and the adjusted
timetable.
