President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to intervene in the ongoing land dispute between Bayero University, Kano (BUK), and neighboring communities by issuing the university the necessary title deed.
Tinubu made the appeal on Saturday during BUK’s 39th
convocation ceremony, where he was represented by the Minister of State for
Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed. He acknowledged the university’s long-standing
challenge of land encroachment and emphasized the need for a proper title to
secure its property.
“The government is aware of the challenge of lack of
perimeter fencing faced by the university and has made some funds available to
construct a fence around the institution,” Tinubu stated.
Beyond land disputes, the president addressed the financial burden of electricity tariffs on Nigerian universities. He urged academic institutions to explore alternative power solutions through research and innovation.
“We are making significant efforts to stabilize electricity
tariffs so that our universities can function optimally. However, while we are
making these conscious efforts, I would like to implore our universities to
leverage research in order to develop alternative power supply solutions,”
Tinubu said.
He also directed university governing councils and senates
to restore the nation’s lost academic culture and ensure that graduates are
equipped with skills to meet global standards.
Earlier, BUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Abbas, highlighted
the university’s financial struggles due to high electricity costs, revealing
that power bills consume nearly a quarter of the institution’s internally
generated revenue.
He appealed to the federal government to consider reducing
electricity tariffs for educational institutions and increasing financial
support for research and innovation.
