Members of the Lagos state house of assembly have passed a vote of confidence in Mojisola Meranda, the speaker, following rumours of her possible resignation.
Oladipo Ajomale, member representing Oshodi-Isolo
constituency 2, moved the motion, affirming the assembly’s trust in Meranda’s
leadership during Monday’s plenary.
The motion was seconded by Gbolahan Ogunleye, who represents
Ikorodu Constituency 1.
Following this, Temitope Adewale, the majority leader, moved
a motion to adjourn plenary indefinitely, which was unanimously approved by the
house.
Earlier in the day, security operatives sealed the speaker’s
office as speculation grew over Meranda’s possible resignation.
Police and task force officers were stationed in vehicles
around the complex, with some patrolling the premises to maintain order.
Meranda became the first female speaker of the Lagos
assembly on January 13, after Mudashiru Obasa was removed while he was out of
the country.
On his return, Obasa challenged the process, arguing that
due procedure was not followed and insisting that he remained the legitimate
speaker of the house.
