Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said the vision of his administration is to make the state the fifth largest economy in Nigeria.
Okpebholo who disclosed this in his speech at the
celebration of his 100-days in office, said his economic development plans
prioritised agriculture, infrastructure, and investment in youth skills
development.
The governor noted that the future of the state is bright
under his leadership as a result of the progress made so far within the period
of 100-days.
While noting that the goal of the administration was to
drive sustainable economic growth over the next four years, he assured that the
state would continue to leverage on its strategic location to attract large
businesses.
He said the businesses would be attracted across key
sectors, encourage Small and Medium Enterprises, SMEs.
According to him, when he took over on November 12, 2024, he
met a state full of potential, but facing serious challenges.
“From day one, our goal has been clear, to restore trust in
leadership, create opportunities, and set Edo on the path to lasting progress.
While there is still much to be done, we have begun taking decisive steps to
turn our vision into reality,” he said.
Okpebholo said in the period under review, his
administration took significant steps to strengthen the state’s economy by
improving the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to over N10 billion.
He said the feat which was the highest ever recorded by any
government in the state was achieved through prudent financial management
strategies deployed by the administration.
Some of the other achievements listed by the governor
include the launching of an interest-free loan scheme for market women,
farmers, and artisans, which will benefit over 5,000 entrepreneurs.
“Additionally, in partnership with the World Bank, we have
disbursed grants to over 400 small business owners, ensuring resilience in the
face of economic challenges.
“To keep food affordable for all, we banned market unions
responsible for price inflation, leading to a significant reduction in food
prices.
“Within these 100 days, we have established the first VVF
Centre in the South-South region, ensuring women receive specialized maternal
care, launched free malaria testing and treatment across all government
hospitals for the next two years.
“Upgraded health facilities across the state, ensuring
quality service delivery for all Edo citizens.
“Amendment of the Anti-Cultism and Anti-Kidnapping laws with
stiffer penalties, leading to a significant reduction in cult-related violence.
“Reconstituted the Edo State Security Corps and recovering
of over 3,500 illegal firearms, procurement of 75 Toyota Hilux vehicles, along
with 350 motorcycles, to enhance mobility and rapid response for security
agencies and among others,” the governor added.
