The Ayo Adebanjo-led faction of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, has appointed Dele Farotimi, a human rights advocate, as its national organising secretary.
Farotimi’s appointment was contained in a communique issued
at the end of a general meeting of the group held at Adebanjo’s residence in
Isanya Ogbo, Ogun state, on Tuesday.
The communique was jointly signed by Oladipo Olaitan, the
group’s deputy leader, and Justice Faloye, the national publicity secretary.
“The general meeting considered and approved the appointment
of Barrister Dele Farotimi as the national organising secretary of the
Afenifere,” Daily Trust quoted from the communique.
The Farotimi’s appointment comes just a day after Afe
Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), agreed to withdraw a defamation
lawsuit he filed against him.
In December, police arrested Farotimi in Lagos and whisked
him to Ekiti.
Farotimi was remanded by the Ekiti state magistrate court in
Ado-Ekiti for 21 days after he was accused of “criminally defaming” Babalola in
a book titled: ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.
He regained freedom on December 24, after the court granted
him bail of N30 million.
