ATBU: Police teargas students protesting killing of undergraduate by robbers

Tension erupted on Monday at the Yelwa Campus of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, in Bauchi, as students, protesting the killing of their colleague, were teargassed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

The students had said they would embark on a peaceful protest on Monday following the fatal stabbing of Joseph Agabaidu, a final-year Geology student of the varsity during a robbery incident.

The robbery incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night.

The 500-level Geology student was said to be returning to his lodge situated around the Yelwan Tudu Market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, at about 7:00 pm, when he was attacked.

The victim reportedly died from the injuries sustained during the attack.

Consequently, the protest embarked on by the students on Monday was disrupted by the Police who stationed their armored tankers opposite the school gate.

The situation escalated as students closed the gate, disrupting activities in the campus.

Attempts by the authorities to pacify the students were met with solidarity songs.
