The upper Senate, on Wednesday, set up a three-member committee led by Senator Ali Ndume to dialogue with leaders of unions of Nigerian workers who were protesting against the removal of fuel subsidy and other anti-poor policies of President Bola Tinubu.
The Senate set up the committee after the workers forcefully gained entrance into the National Assembly by pulling down the gate.
The protesters had earlier gathered at the Unity Fountain from where they marched to the NASS Complex.
Following their action, the Senate presided over by Godswill Akpabio had immediately gone into a closed-door session.
At the end of the closed door session, the Senate announced that a three-man committee has been set up to meet with the protesters at the National Assembly.
Aside Ndume, the other members of the committee are Senators Ireti Kingibe and Tony Nwonye —
The Senate also resolved to meet with the leaders of NLC and TUC over their grievances
Ndume later led two other members of the committee to meet with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero; and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Festus Osifo.
Speaking to the labour leaders, Ndume asked them to call off the nationwide protest and give the Senate one week to address their demands..
The Borno Senator noted that a motion is already on the floor of the Senate, co-authored by all senators, to address the issues surrounding the FG-Labour deliberations.
The Senator therefore asked the labour unions to give the Senate one week to resolve the issues.
He said the unions can call for another nationwide protest if they were not satisfied with the outcome of the Senate intervention.
The Organised Labour including the NLC, the TUC and their affiliate unions, today, kicked off a nationwide protest to protest removal of fuel subsidy on petrol announced by President Tinubu during his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023.
The removal of subsidy has led to jump in price of petrol from less than N200 to over N620 with knock on astronomical effect on prices of food items and otehr goods.
