The Oyo state police command has confirmed the death of
Opeyemi Ajewole, a professor of social and environmental forestry at the
University of Ibadan (UI).
Adewale Osifeso, the police command’s spokesperson, told NAN
on Tuesday that there is an ongoing investigation into the matter.
It is understood that the professor was killed by suspected
gunmen on his way home on Monday night.
“The matter is under investigation. Updates would be
provided accordingly,” Osifeso was quoted to have said.
A lecturer at the institution, who preferred anonymity, also
told NAN that the assailants took away the professor’s car after killing him.
“It is true, he was killed last night while returning home.
They shot him and took his car away,” the source said.
The varsity is yet to speak on the issue as of the time of
filling this report.
The development comes amid concerns over rising insecurity
across various states in the country.
In March, Felix Akpan, a professor of political science at
the University of Calabar (UNICAL), was also found dead in his apartment.
Irene Ugbo, the Cross River police command spokesperson, had
said Akpan’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds in his apartment in
Calabar, the state capital.
