FG completes evacuation of Nigerian students from Egypt border, Port Sudan

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) says all Nigerian students fleeing war-torn Sudan have been successfully evacuated.

NIDCOM made the announcement on Saturday.

The commission said 2,518 Nigerians have been evacuated since the exercise started on May 3

Sadiya Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, had said each returnee would be given N100,000.

Recall that the citizens evacuated from Sudan had been stranded at the Egyptian border following visa issues.

Others had been transported to Port Sudan where they were airlifted to Nigeria.

It is not clear if the evacuation process will continue for other non-students who may be stranded in Sudan.

When asked for clarity, Gabriel Odu, a spokesperson for NIDCOM, told TheCable he was unsure of how things would unfold.

“I can’t say emphatically, let’s watch closely,” he said.

According to the commission, the evacuations were carried out by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Tarco Air, Max Air, Azman Air, and Air Peace.

The evacuated Nigerians were brought home batch by batch, with Tarco Air responsible for 11 of the 15 flights.

“During this exercise, no single Nigerian life has been lost so far,” NIDCOM added.
