Ohanaeze crisis: ‘I escaped assassination’ – Isiguzoro

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro has claimed that he escaped an assassination attempt.

Isiguzoro, who belongs to a faction of the organisation, said the incident happened along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway on Friday evening.

The Ohanaeze Secretary-General disclosed that while travelling for the funeral of the late Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Abia State, Uche Ikonne, the assassins accosted his vehicle and were shooting at it.

Isiguzoro claimed the unknown gunmen, however, stopped on approaching a military checkpoint around Isiaku junction.

He urged those behind the attempt on his life to desist.

He said: “I was travelling for the funeral of the late PDP governorship candidate in Abia State, Ikonne; I was travelling from Ebonyi to Abia and around a place called Isiagu, a Camry car was chasing my vehicle, but my driver sped off.

“On the course of the chase, my car was shot at around Isiagu junction along Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway; we ran into a military checkpoint consisting of a joint team; they were alerted, and the Camry swerved and returned to the local route. We reported the incident to the security agents and continued our movement to Abia State.

“The attempted attack sent a lot of panic into my being; I don’t know who they were or why they were after me – irrespective of the panic they created, I have no fear because I believe in God.

“The world should know that I escaped an attempted assassination and I don’t have any personal quarrel with anybody. What we are doing is to continue telling the Igbo the truth, saying things that would ensure our people are not politically or economically cut off from Nigeria.

“We will continue to shout when things are against the Igbo nation, and those not comfortable with it should not resort to gangsterism, kidnapping or shooting of people or trying to assassinate the known voice of the Igbo nation.”
