World Cup: Quality not enough – Pepe, Felix react to Santos benching Ronaldo

Atletico Madrid and Porto stars, Joao Felix and Pepe has spoken on the decision of the Portugal manager Fernando Santos to drop Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for their massive win against Switzerland on Tuesday

The legendary striker was on the bench as his side recorded an impressive Round of sixteen win over Switzerland with his replacement, Goncalo Ramos scoring three of the goals.

The former Manchester United star went on with just 17 minutes to the end of the game but could not add to his one goal tally in the tournament.

Both Pepe and Felix are highly supportive of their national team captain and believe the manager’s decision must be respected.

“Whether Cristiano is there or not, the important thing is the collective. The team also plays well when Cristiano is there. It was a great match for the whole team,” Felix told reporters after the game.

And 39-year-old Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Pepe added, “He knows perfectly well that the most important thing is ‘us’. What happened today was the coach’s choice and must be respected.

“In today’s football, quality is not enough.”
