Why I refused to merge FRSC with other agencies – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he resisted the temptation to merge the Federal Road Special Corps (FRSC) with other sister agencies during his reign as the nation’s president.

According to Obasanjo, the responsibilities of the FRSC are increasing due to the rising population of the nation.

In a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the octogenarian disclosed that he was tempted as the nation’s helmsman to collapse the FRSC into another agency.

“I don’t know if others will still come and merge you with others, but I hope they will not,” Obasanjo stated, insisting “your responsibility is getting larger and larger by the day”

Rather than merging, Obasanjo pleaded that the government should continue to enhance the professional capacity of the corps, to bring the best out of what its operatives do.

Obasanjo spoke while playing host to a delegation of the FRSC, led by the Deputy Corp Marshall, Susan Akenge, at his OOPL Penthouse residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Obasanjo, who commended the traffic regulatory agency for ensuring sanity on the roads amidst the increasing population and the economy, also acknowledged that the corps has reasonably been doing well, saying “you have been beneficial to us all.”

FRSC was established in 1988 by former Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

Earlier, Akenge said she was on the courtesy call to appreciate Obasanjo for the support he gave for the survival of the corps.

“On behalf of the headquarters of the FRSC, I have come to appreciate you and thank you Sir,” she said, praying God to grant Obasanjo longer life to reap the fruit of his labour.
