Fan dies of injury sustained in Asake concert stampede

One of the critically injured persons at the O2 Brixton concert by Asake has been confirmed dead.

Asake put together a show at the 4900-capacity O2 Academy in Brixton where he performed his debut album.

The concert was, however, canceled mid-way after a crowd of thousands breached the doors in a stampede.

The incident left some of the concert-goers injured, with at least eight of them hospitalised.

In a statement on Saturday, Asake revealed that he is “devastated” following the death of one Rebecca Ikumelo.

The singer expressed his condolences to the family of the concertgoer while urging fans to keep her in their prayers.

He further stated that the cause of the stampede is still being investigated.

“I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo, who was in a critical condition since Thursday has sadly passed away,” the singer wrote.

“My sincerest condolences to her loved ones at this time. Let us please keep her family in our prayers. I have spoken to them and will continue to do so.

“I am overwhelmed with grief and could never have imagined anything like this happening.

“My team and I are still awaiting the full debrief back from the venue management and the police to determine what exactly led to all the disruption caused and ultimately to Rebecca’s passing.

“If you have any relevant information relating to this please do reach out to the metropolitan police.”

Speaking on the stampede, Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, said four of the eight concertgoers who were hospitalised were in “critical condition”.

“I’m heartbroken that this could happen to young Londoners enjoying a night out,” the mayor added.
