Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, suffered a gaffe while speaking at the
party’s campaign rally in Plateau state.
The rally was held at the Rwang Pam township stadium in Jos,
the Plateau capital.
Atiku, while concluding his speech in Hausa, said: “For
God’s sake and for the value of this place, ensure that you vote for A… I mean
PDP this time around”.
The PDP candidate also promised his supporters in Plateau
that if the party is elected in the 2023 elections, peace will return to the
state.
“Yesterday, when we
finished with Nasarawa successfully, I was told ‘let’s go back to Abuja’, and I
said I won’t go back to Abuja because here is also my home and I have a house
here. We came and slept in it,” he said.
“What I want you to understand is that we’ve made a promise
that if you vote for PDP, which I’m sure you would, we promise to bring back
peace in Plateau.
“We will bring development in Plateau, especially for the
youths who are the ones I’m seeing here mostly. All of you, men and women, we
will ensure that we boost the economy of Plateau state so that jobs and
business opportunities will be provided.
“This is a promise we have made to you. Also, most of your
roads, we are aware of their bad condition because the government of the APC
hasn’t done anything about it for the past eight years. We promise to fix the
roads.
“Therefore, people of Plateau, this place has its history.
In this place, we voted MKO Abiola; in this place, we voted Olusegun Obasanjo;
we voted for different presidents in this place.”
Abubakar, who had earlier defected to the All Progressives
Congress (APC), had rejoined the PDP in December 2017.
Meanwhile, the PDP presidential candidate’s gaffe comes
weeks after a similar incident involving Bola Tinubu of the APC, which also
occurred at the same stadium.
While addressing supporters at the Plateau rally, Tinubu,
APC presidential candidate, had said “God bless PD… APC”.
Interestingly, Tinubu’s gaffe also occurred on a Tuesday.
