The Arewa Youths Alliance for Progress and Development
(AYAPD) has called for the sack of NNPC MD Mele Kyari, the MD of Duke Oil (initials
L.S.), and others responsible for ensuring the availability of fuel in the
country.
The network of 47 northern youth groups expressed sadness
over the continuous shortage of Premium Motor Spirit, which has resulted in
fuel being sold at over N250 per litre in many areas.
The youths lamented that in locations where the product is
available, the price is often far above the official subsidized rate, which
they said is unacceptable to Nigerians.
Jamilu Shitu Dunkawa and James Ishaku, Chairman and
Secretary of the group, in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in
Kaduna, said: “The present cycle of scarcity was officially attributed to the
flooding in Lokoja, Kogi State, which blocked the major road linking Southern
and Northern Nigeria. Several weeks after the flood has vanished and harmattan
breeze is blowing, the situation has remained the same — if not worse.”
The group criticized the energy crisis, pointing out that
fueling stations owned by NNPC LTD were not dispensing fuel. “Virtually all the
former Oando stations recently acquired do not have the product. If NNPC itself
doesn’t have fuel, who else does?” the group asked.
The statement noted that the resurgence of long queues coincided
with the period of a security alert issued by the US Embassy regarding a
potential terrorist threat in Abuja.
AYAPD alleged that the ongoing scarcity, coupled with Duke
Oil’s inability to meet demand, could aggravate national insecurity by forcing
Nigerians to gather in large numbers at fuel stations, creating
vulnerabilities. They clarified that these were concerns about consequences —
not accusations of intent.
They also referenced previous fuel crises, attributing them
to different reasons at different times, and accused NNPC and its subsidiaries
of failing to stabilize supply despite repeated disruptions.
The group criticized the lack of transparency in the
National Assembly’s probe into the importation of adulterated fuel and
expressed concern that the current hardship could worsen during the festive
season, potentially affecting public sentiment toward President Muhammadu
Buhari’s administration.
The statement concluded by calling for the sack of senior
figures in NNPC and its trading subsidiaries, and urged security agencies to
ensure due diligence and accountability in the petroleum supply chain.
