Calvin Bassey has admitted that playing against his former club, Rangers, in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash was weird.
Bassey severed ties with Rangers this summer, linking up with Eredivisie champions, Ajax.
The defender was in fantastic form as Ajax destroyed Rangers 4-0 at the Johan Cryuff Stadium, Amsterdam.
The 22-year-old also grabbed an assist in the game.
“I’m buzzing, but it’s a weird feeling,” Bassey told UEFA’s official website.
“When I’m not playing against the boys I’m rooting for them and wanting them to win, but on the pitch you have to switch that focus and I’m pleased to get the win.”
Bassey also reflected on the win and praised his teammates for their efficiency in front of goal.
“It wasn’t easy for us; we just executed at the right times. There’s still work that can be done for us to get better and we’re pleased with the performance,” he added.
Ajax have now kept a clean sheet in each of their last four matches across all competitions.
