Organisers of the Qatar 2022 World Cup say alcohol
consumption will be allowed in “designated locations” inside the stadiums
throughout the tournament.
According to BBC, Nasser Al Khater, the chief
executive officer (CEO) of the competition, announced the development on
Wednesday.
Qatar is billed to host the rest of the world to the first
FIFA World Cup in the middle east when the curtain raises on the mundial on
November 20 through December 18.
Like other middle eastern and Muslim countries, alcohol is forbidden, according to the teachings of Islam.
Al Khater revealed that the country is still “finalising our
alcohol strategy” during the competition.
In what is said to be the first of its kind, the competition
CEO also announced plans to allow fans to drink within the stadium perimeter.
He also confirmed that there will be a 40,000-capacity fan
zone in the capital Doha where liquor can be purchased.
The CEO added that alcohol will not be sold on the streets
other than in “these designated spots” with additional locations to be
“communicated in due course.”
“What we ask is that people, when they visit, stick to these
designated areas,” he was quoted as saying.
“We are incredibly excited to be welcoming the world to
Qatar and the Middle East and Arab world. For many people it will be their first
opportunity to see and explore the region.
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are
determined to use it to its fullest.
“While alcohol will
be available to those who want a drink in designated areas, it will not be
openly available on the streets.”
The tournament will undoubtedly make Qatar the most
lucrative tourist destination this winter with one of the VIP hospitality
suites at Lusail Stadium, the venue for the final game, reportedly sold for an astonishing £2.1 million.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will not be featuring at the
tournament after Ghana pipped them to one of the five African tickets in March.
