‘Plead with Wike, aggrieved members’ — Ayu leads PDP NWC to visit Wabara

Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday, led the party’s national working committee (NWC) to visit Adolphus Wabara.

The meeting was held at the residence of Wabara, who was appointed the acting board of trustees (BoT) chairman of the party on Thursday.

Speaking at the meeting, Ayu asked Wabara to ensure efforts are in top gear for the party’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

He also asked the acting PDP BoT chairman to reach out to Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, and other “aggrieved” members to foster unity in the party ahead of the 2023 polls.

“I am calling on you to lead in reaching out to our aggrieved members,” Ayu said.

“You have the full support of myself, the candidate (Atiku Abubakar), and the whole NWC to reach out to governor Wike, all the other governors, and any other person who is aggrieved. Plead with them to come back and let’s work together in the PDP family.

“If we don’t win next year, Nigerians will be very disappointed. The hope of Nigeria is on us.

“So, as the new BoT chairman and with your diplomatic experience, we implore you to use your diplomatic skills to reach out to all our aggrieved members.

“It is with your full support, including that of the presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate. We are appealing that they should come back and let us work together.”

On Thursday, the PDP national executive committee (NEC) passed a vote of confidence in Ayu and the NWC, despite calls for the resignation of the party chairman.

Party members, especially those in Wike’s camp, demanded Ayu’s resignation as a condition for resolving the crisis.

The call for Ayu’s resignation is said to be on the grounds that the national chairman and the presidential candidate cannot be from the same region.

But Ayu has described those who want him out of office as “children”.
