The United Nations Children’s Funds, UNICEF, has tasked media organizations to raise their voice in the interest of children, especially during the electioneering period.

The call was made by the chief of the UNICEF field office, Kano, Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah at a two-day capacity building workshop and partnership strengthening for the media in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina, held in Kano.

Represented by a Communication Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, Kano Field Office, Samuel Kaalu, he said media organizations have a vital role to play in promoting children’s issues in Nigeria.

According to a survey by UNICEF, poor education, violence against children, terrorism, and poverty are some of the biggest challenges for children in Nigeria.

He explained that the media is the only hope for children through which their voices can be heard.

“The media have enormous power which can be deployed to address the issues of children.

“Engage with political actors, and relevant stakeholders and tell them what are the needs to achieve their full potential in life.

“Some media institutions are performing below their expectations on the children issue in Nigeria,” he said.

He said there was an urgent need for Nigeria to invest more in children for a brighter future for the country.
