BREAKING: ISWAP ‘claims responsibility’ for Kuje prison attack, releases video

The Islamic State in West Africa Province has claimed responsibility for the attack on Kuje Prison where inmates were freed in Abuja.

The terrorists claimed the responsibility in a video released Wednesday night.

In the video, the terrorists showed how some of its members entered the Kuje prison.

The 38 seconds video showed that the terrorists shot indiscriminately before gaining access into the prison.

The Islamic State’s A’maq Agency first released the video with a caption in Arabic. The caption read, “Fighters of Islamic State attacked Kuje prison in Abuja yesterday and succeeded in releasing many prisoners.”

The video showed an elderly man and young men shouting while claiming responsibility for the attack with many fighters marching as vehicles and building were on fire.

The video also shows writing in Arabic, which, when translated, has ISWAP saying its members organised the attack.

“A video clip obtained by Amaq shows the first moments of the liberation of prisoners after Islamic State fighters stormed Kuje prison yesterday in Nigeria,” it reads.

According to Tomasz Rolbecki, a researcher who analyses activities of insurgents in sub-Saharan Africa, ISWAP said the attack resulted in its fighters “freeing dozens of prisoners”.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has described the attack as “shocking”, and said he is disappointed with the intelligence gathering capacity of security agencies.

“I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it? I am expecting a comprehensive report on this shocking incident,” he said during a visit to the facility on Wednesday.
