2023: Emergence of Obi, Kwankwaso may lead to presidential election re-run – US delegates

A delegation of the United States-based National Democratic Institute (NDI) and International Republican Institute (IRI) has hinted at the possibility of a re-run of the presidential election in 2023.

The delegation of the NDI/IRI, led by Secretary of State for the State of Ohio, USA, Mr. Frank LaRose stated this yesterday during their visit to Nigeria.

The delegation claimed that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party may force the 2023 contest into a re-run for the first time in the country.

Mr Frank maintained that the forthcoming elections are a departure from some of the political dynamics experienced in the country previously.

The report said, “If a third party draws sufficient support, a runoff presidential election could be a real possibility for the first time since the transition to democracy, adding complexity to the 2023 elections.”

“The emergence of Mr Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate for the Labour Party, LP and Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and presidential candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party NNPP, as viable ‘Third Forces’ has excited many young Nigerians”.
