Zamfara ex-Deputy Chief of Staff, Bashir Maru at large as court begins criminal trial


The former Zamfara State Deputy Chief of Staff, Alhaji Bashir Maru was absent in court as his trial began in a two-count criminal charge against him and four others.


It was reported that Zamfara State Police Command had arraigned Bashir and 4 others before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Gusau, the State capital, for alleged criminal conspiracy, attempt to commit offence of criminal misappropriation, contrary to section 97 & 95 of Panel Code.


The Chief Magistrate, Sa’adu Gurbin Bore after listening to arguments by Counsel to the complainant (Zamfara State government) and the accused persons, adjourned the hearing to a date to be communicated later.


Earlier, Counsels to the number one defendant, Barrister Isah Jabbi Usman and Barrister Ahmad Kwatarkwashi explained to the presiding judge that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case, urging him to transfer the case to a higher court of competent jurisdiction.


Muhammad Aminu Esq, counsel to the complainant urged the court not to grant bail to 2 of the suspects who appeared before the court to enable the police continue conducting their investigations, as well as arrest the other 3 defendans who are still at large, including the former Deputy Chief of Staff to Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle and immediate past chairman of the State Hospital Services management Board, Dr Bashir Muhammad Maru, who neither appear before the court, nor sent legal representative.


They are being accused of selling a government vehicle without approval.
