Nigeria Police Affairs Minister, Muhammad Dingyadi, has
alleged that the insecurity situation bedevilling the country would be worsened
if everyone in the country is allowed to bear arms.
Dingyadi disclosed this while fielding questions from
pressmen at a media parley in Abuja on Thursday in respect to the call from the
Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa, who last week
advocated for Nigerians to be allowed to bear arms in self-defence due to the
deteriorating security situation in the country.
According to Dingyadi, “We are even trying to ensure that we
minimize the circulation of firearms among most Nigerians. There is need to
restrict this to people who are supposed to own them and those who have been
trained to use them and people who have access to use them. Otherwise, if you
make it all people’s affair, it will worsen the situation. This is my honest
opinion. I don’t share that view at this moment, I don’t support that.”
He also noted that efforts are in top gear to ensure that
the implementation of salary increments for police officers across the country
becomes a reality in no distant time.
