NANS seeks investigation over shooting of Poly student by policeman in Ibadan

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Oyo State Police Command to explain what led to the shooting of a student of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, by a policeman in Ibadan.

It was gathered on Monday that Samuel Akinsuyi, a Business Administration student of the Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic in Eruwa, was shot by a yet-to-be identified policeman.

The victim, according to sources, was beaten and then shot on the leg by a stop and search police officer.

The incident occurred when Akinsuyi was coming from Eruwa to Ibadan on Friday.

It was gathered that the policeman ran away after he shot the victim.

NANS, which is the umbrella body of tertiary institution students in the country, is now demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.

The students’ body noted that the police authorities should investigate the matter and punish the erring officer.

Olatunji Adegboye, South-West coordinator of NANS in a statement obtained by newsmen on Monday, alleged that harmless and helpless Nigerians have continued to fall victim to bloodthirsty police officers on a daily basis.

He added that many Nigerians have been subjected to inhuman treatments, ranging from verbal assault, outright assault, unlawful arrest, unjust detention and more often than not, being shot at by erring police officers.

He alleged that those saddled with the responsibility of safeguarding the citizens from danger have turned themselves to the actual danger through their actions.

“On Friday, March 11, 2022, the Nigerian students yet again suffered a great injustice from the hands of a reckless policeman.

“Akinsuyi Samuel, a Business Administration student at the Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic in Eruwa was beaten and then shot on the leg by a yet-to-be-identified stop and search police officer, on his way from Eruwa to Ibadan, on Friday.

“This demonic action has thrown Mr. Samuel Akinsuyi into a titanic battle against paralysis. It is rather unfortunate that several days after the criminal incident, the Nigeria Police Force, Oyo State Command, and the Police Service Commission have failed to make convincing action statement over this persistent cankerworm.

“Up till now, the assailant remains unidentified. This is a clear sign of the regular conspiracy practices of the police force.

“As we continue to piece the puzzle together, we demand a thorough and exhaustive investigation to identify the culprit and that the law be allowed to take its full course through the arrest, dismissal and prosecution of the offender as well as other disciplinary actions from the force itself and the police commission.

“On a daily basis, harmless and helpless Nigerian citizens continue to fall victim to bloodthirsty police officers who mete out on Nigerians various inhuman treatments ranging from verbal assault, outright assault, unlawful arrest, unjust detention and more often than not, being shot at,” he said.

But, Public Relations Officer of the State Police command, Adewale Osifeso when contacted, said that investigations were ongoing to unravel the incident.

Osifeso, in a reply to newsmen enquiry said that update would be provided later.

He said, “Investigations are ongoing at the moment.

“You would be provided updates in due course”.
