Bako Gorgore, a top Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) commander, is expected to become the new leader.
The terrorist will assume the role following the elimination of the late Wali (Head) Sani Shuwaram.
Nigerian forces obliterated Shuwaram at a hideout around Kirta Wulgo near Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
Air Force strikes hit ISWAP camps identified after an Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) mission.
Shuwaram died months after installation in Kurnawa, Lake Chad. In attendance were emissaries from ISIS.
The 45-year-old had succeeded Malam Bako, who led in an acting capacity until his death.
Bako took over from Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, the late leader and son of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf.
Shuwaram was the fifth officially recognised head of ISWAP. Other predecessors were Mamman Nur, Abba-Gana and Abu-Dawud, all deceased.
