EPL: UK govt announces changes to Chelsea’s license

The UK government will allow Chelsea sell some tickets again after amending the terms of its sanctioning license, ESPN reports.

This means that Real Madrid fans can attend the Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were banned from selling tickets, after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned in February, over his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The Blues are also now allowed to receive a £30m payment from its parent company, Fordstam, to provide cash to meet costs.

Chelsea had been granted a license to continue operating as a football club, but with strict limitations on its commercial ventures.

However, an updated government document has confirmed that the terms of the license now allows them to sell Champions League tickets again.

Chelsea welcome Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie in April.

The easing of the restrictions means the Premier League club can sell tickets but won’t receive the cash. UEFA is set to collect the proceeds.

Chelsea cannot sell new tickets for home Premier League fixtures to their fans — beyond existing season ticket holders — but away fans can now buy tickets.
