Title holders Chelsea took command of their Champions League last-16 tie against Lille with a comfortable first-leg victory at Stamford Bridge.
Kai Havertz, leading the attack with out-of-form Romelu Lukaku dropped to the bench, headed in an early opener.
Lille grew into the game as the first half wore on with the lively Renato Sanches firing over.
But Christian Pulisic made it 2-0 midway through the second half with a cool finish.
The win vindicated boss Thomas Tuchel's decision to not start Lukaku following the £97.5m striker's recent struggles in front of goal.
Chelsea will now look to complete their passage to the quarter-finals when they head to the home of the French champions for the second leg on Wednesday, 16 March.
