One dead, many injured as vehicles collide in Osun


Several passengers have been injured in a road traffic accident that occurred on Thursday at the Dunghill axis of the Ife-Ilesa highway.


The accident happen ed when a light blue Toyota Rav4 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number FST 746 GD had a head-on collision with an unregistered white Toyota bus.


The Osun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) through its spokesperson, Agnes Ogungbemi, stated that the combined passengers involved in the accident were 33 while 30 were seriously injured.


A breakdown of the passengers revealed that seven male and nine female adults, six male and eight female children were seriously injured while the remaining three adult males escaped unhurt.


Ogungbemi stated that the victims were rescued by a combined team of the FRSC and O’Ambulance and taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, while the vehicles involved had been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) Police Post, Ile-Ife.


Ogungbemi while speaking with newsmen cautioned drivers to drive within the approved speed limits, obey traffic rules and signs and carry out periodic maintenance checks on their vehicles.


Also, a man was confirmed killed in another road traffic accident which occurred at the Obadare area along the Ilesa-Ife highway on Thursday afternoon.


Ogungbemi revealed that the fatal lone accident occurred when the ash-coloured Toyota bus with registration number KPA216LG the passengers were travelling in lost a tyre as a result of overspeeding on the part of the driver.


Out of the 17 passengers travelling in the bus, two male and two female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries while the remaining 12 passengers escaped unhurt.


The injured victims, according to Ogungbemi, were rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa while the corpse of the dead passenger was deposited at the hospital morgue.
