EPL: Rangnick under fire over decision on Mason Greenwood

Arsenal icon, Ian Wright, has criticized Manchester United manager, Ralf Rangnick, over his decision on Mason Greenwood following the Red Devils’ Premier League 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday night.

Wright said he was left ‘baffled’ by Rangnick’s decision to replace Greenwood during Manchester United’s defeat to Wolves, insisting the German did not place enough trust in his young attacker.

Man United was defeated at Old Trafford following Joao Moutinho’s second-half goal.

While Man United struggled to get out of first gear for much of the game, Greenwood was their bright spark during a difficult first half.

But the 20-year-old was replaced on the hour by Bruno Fernandes, a decision that drew boos from the home fans at the stadium.

“I think that was a sacrifice because it is easy to take him off,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“You are not going to take off Cavani or Ronaldo. He is taken off Greenwood who is someone at the age where he’s kind of fearless. We know what he is capable of doing.

“He is always going to get on the ball and dribble at people. You don’t take that off because he is going to do something at some stage that is going to create a chance.

“When you consider (Nemanja) Matic and (Scott) McTominay played the whole 90 minutes when they needed something, I’m baffled by that.”

He added, “I’m quite disappointed with Ralf there with omission about Edinson Cavani or Greenwood.

“In this game, Greenwood was giving more. For Greenwood to be taken off, because Cavani is more experienced and the stature of the player, says to me, ‘I don’t trust him enough now’.

“I’m not taking Mason Greenwood off. For him to say: ‘And I just chose Greenwood’ is just taking off the youngster who is doing more.”
