AFCON 2021: CAF has blocked replacement for Ighalo – Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has claimed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) blocked him from calling up a replacement for Odion Ighalo.

Eguavoen has revealed he considered inviting ex-Golden Eaglets star Akinkunmi Amoo to replace Ighalo.

Ighalo was included in the 28-man squad to AFCON but had to drop out after his club Al-Shabab blocked him from linking up with his colleagues.

It is a similar situation to that of Watford attacker, Emmanuel Dennis, who also had to drop out after the Premier League club denied him the opportunity to travel.

However, while Eguavoen was able to call up a replacement for Dennis, he could not invite a new player as a replacement for Ighalo.

“We wanted to call up Silas Nwankwo or Akinwunmi Amoo to replace Ighalo, but CAF insisted that we can’t because the change isn’t injury-enforced,” Eguavoen told the media on Thursday.

The Super Eagles begin their AFCON campaign against Egypt next Tuesday.
