NYSC: Reps mull re-opening of Maiduguri camp

The House of Representatives will be investigating if it is okay to open the NYSC camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The lower chamber mandated the Committee on Youth Development to investigate the refusal of the NYSC to re-open the camp despite the ‘peace in the state’.

The decision followed a motion moved by Usman Zanna on Wednesday on the floor of the House.

According to Mr Zanna, the camp has been closed for over 10years by the NYSC at the start of the Boko Haram insurgents.

He stated that the camp was relocated to Katsina State, while internally displaced persons occupied the camp. Noting that those IDPs have been relocated by the Borno State government.

Mr Zanna said that “Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum wrote letters to the Director General of NYSC to reopen the Camp but to no avail.”

Speaking again the motion, Uzoma Abonta said opening the camp despite the insecurity in Borno would be double jeopardy.

The Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who presided over the session, said the idea of investigation is to get the true situation of things.
