EPL: I’m coming home – John Terry confirms Chelsea return

Chelsea FC legend, John Terry, has returned to the club four years after he announced his retirement from professional football.

The former England defender announced this on Wednesday via his verified Twitter handle, stating that he was returning to the Blues in a consultancy role with the club’s academy.

He wrote, “I’m delighted to announce that I’m coming home, and have taken up a consultancy role @ChelseaFC academy. As well as delivering on-field coaching sessions, I will be involved in coaching discussions and mentoring our academy players.”

Chelsea also confirmed the development in a statement noting that the appointment would be part-time, giving the former captain time to develop his coaching skills

The statement also quoted the Blues’ Head of youth development Neil Bath said Terry’s appointment was beneficial to the academy due to his vast experience both as a player and an assistant coach.

He was quoted as saying, “We are delighted to be welcoming John back to Cobham in a role that will involve coaching and mentoring the next generation of young players in our Academy.

“It goes without saying that John’s experience in the game, both as a world-class player and more recently as an assistant coach in the Premier League, will be invaluable for everyone in the building.

“He will be a great mentor for our players and a fantastic asset to our coaching staff. We can’t wait for him to get started.”

After spending 20 years at Chelsea, Terry joined Aston Villa as an assistant coach.

During his time with the London side, Terry made 717 professional appearances for the club, with more than 500 as team captain.

Terry won 17 trophies with Chelsea, including five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
