Modern history and short features of the French Ligue 1

The professional football league in France was founded in 1930, it happens because of the National Council of the French Football Federation voted in favor of establishing it. Thanks to this, nowadays all football fans can watch today's football results and enjoy the matches of Ligue 1. Georges Bayrou who is best known for initiating the European Cup a few years earlier (first club competition held in all of Europe) and the "Golden Ball" voting - awarding the best football player of the year, were considered the founders of this league.

The French football league started holding regular matches only 2 years later, that is, since 1932. Its original composition consisted of 20 clubs. They were selected according to 3 main criteria, namely:

1.   Good sports performance in the past when football in France was amateur.

2.      Stable financial position of the club.

3.      Minimum 8 professional footballers.

Olympique Lille, which existed under this name until 1944, became the champion of France. Previously, this club also won an amateur tournament in the 1913/14 season. Now this team is known as Lille OSC. After the first season today's football result, the French Football Association decided to make changes to the game system. The number of teams was reduced to 14, but they were no longer separated into two separate groups. Then the league was renamed for the first time: National was renamed Division 1.

And what happened next?

A demotion and promotion system was introduced from the next season. The competition of the League 1 scores was also increased by 2 clubs, and since then 16 teams have taken part in this competition. At the beginning of the league's existence, this criterion was very volatile, and in this form it did not last long, until the outbreak of World War II and the 1938/39 season.

Until the games were suspended for 6 years as a result of World War II, teams such as Seth and Sochaux (twice) and Olympique de Marseille became champions of France. Football games were played in France during World War II, but they are not considered official. Football clubs played in regional leagues: northern and southern. Competition for the French championship returned from the 1945/46 season. It is interesting that the first post-war winner was Lille, the same club that won the first official French league title, Olympique Lille. This time there were 18 teams, according to the League 1 score. The change in this arrangement happened only 20 years later, that is, in 1965.
