Cristiano Ronaldo would be the greatest casualty of the new Manchester United setting under the incoming interim boss, Ralf Rangnick.
According to fbref.com via the Mirror, the playing style of Rangnick is based almost entirely on the principles of pressing and energy.
And this pattern favours two players who stand out as being impressive pressers in United’s team being Fred and Bruno Fernandes.
Brazilian midfielder Fred has made 224 ‘pressures’ for the Red Devils in the domestic league this season, with Fernandes second on 205.
France International Paul Pogba, has dropped off to third-placed on 135.
The 36-year-old Ronaldo has made just 39 ‘pressures’ this season in the league which is fewer than Man United’s central defenders Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane.
Ronaldo does not press, unsurprising given his age and style of play which is often decisive but does leave his side somewhat short in attacking intensity.
It is possible that the new boss devises a system that can account for one player’s lack of pressing.
However, Ronaldo’s goal output is an incredibly persuasive reason to overlook other shortcomings in his performance.
Yet this is a clear challenge for Rangnick to overcome.
