Edo election: EFCC arraigns man for allegedly duping APC of N70m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned Tope Jimi Fagun before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri.

Fagun faces a-two count charge of impersonation and obtaining N70million by false pretence.

The defendant allegedly presented himself as Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to Alhaji Bukar Dalori and collected the money meant to aid the 2020 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign in Edo.

The offence is punishable under sections 1(1)(b) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

The other count violates sections 179 of the Penal Code Law Caps 12 Laws of Borno State.

Fagun pleaded “not guilty” when the charges were read. The prosecution counsel, Alqasim Jafa’ar asked the court to remand him in prison.

Responding, his lawyer, Alli Apanisile informed the court of a pending application for bail and prayed the court allow the motion.

Justice Kumaliya declined the prayer and adjourned till November 24 for hearing of the application and commencement of trial.

The judge ordered that Fagun be remanded in a correctional facility.
