#EndSARSMemorial: Youths storm Ondo streets, say police brutality persists

Youths in Ondo State on Wednesday joined their counterparts across the country to commemorate the one year anniversary of the the EndSARS protest.

The youths in their hundreds who stormed the streets of Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday lamented that despite the 2020 protest, the police and the government were yet to do the right thing.

During the protest, youths embarked on a candle light procession from Post Office junction along the popular Oba Adesida road through the A-Division axis to NEPA roundabout before terminating it at the police headquarters, Igbatoro road.

Chanting various solidarity songs, the protesters who were decked in black attires, stated that the issues which led to the massive protest a year ago were still much around.

According to the leader of the protesters, Tope Temokun, “We appeared before the panel and there were recommendations. The governor received the recommendations and he made very correct observations. Some politicians presented damages of as much as N100m that their houses were burnt down by hoodlums.

“One rich man in an entire one million member community was claiming N100m from the government for his house that was burnt down. If you are loved by your people, no matter how bad the situation, your people are going to protect you, nobody is going to touch your house.

“But we have genuine people. I appeared before the panel on police killing in Okitipupa and people that were killed since 2011, and this are genuine cases with the governor.

“We have people who are still suffering injustice from the anti-kidnapping squad and anti-cultism squad of the Police force in Ondo State. The brutality still continues. There should be a room for public engagement of officers that are being sent on the road.”

While receiving the protesters at the police headquarters, the Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami who commended them for their peaceful conduct disclosed that all their grievances would be tabled before the state government.
