Driver flees as tanker crushes two in Ogun

A fuel-laden tanker on Saturday rammed into a commercial bus along the Lagos-Ibadan highway, killing two passengers.

To avoid being lynched, the driver of the truck was said to have escaped from the scene.

Two other persons were said to have also sustained injuries in the accident that occurred around 6am when the tanker driver lost control as a result of brake failure.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps said the early morning accident occurred at the New Makun City, Lenuwa, outbound Lagos.

A MACK tanker truck with number plate AKD 549 XL and Toyota Hiace bus registered as KSF 259 CQ were involved in the road crash.

TRACE Corps Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, revealed that amidst gridlock, “the rolling tanker squeezed the bus, killing two passengers instantly and injuring two others,”

He said, “According to an eyewitness, the truck had brake failure, the driver lost control in the process and the truck rammed into a bus in its front of it and squeezed the bus.”

Akinbiyi added that the bodies of the victims were deposited at Idera Hospital, Sagamu interchange, where the injured are also being treated.

Commiserating with the families of the deceased, the traffic regulatory agency warned drivers and owners of articulated vehicles to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles and avoid speeding and dangerous driving.
