Transfer deadline: I’m disappointed’ – Gary Neville blasts Man United star for refusing to leave Old Trafford

Manchester United legend, Gary Neville has slammed Jesse Lingard for refusing to leave the club this summer.

Neville said he is ‘disappointed that the England star remained at Old Trafford and feels he will only play a very small role at the club this season.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a brilliant loan spell at West Ham last season scoring nine goals and laying on four assists in 16 appearances.

He is now part of reintegrated into the first-team squad despite West Ham trying to make the deal permanent.

However, Neville doubts the player’s decision and feels Lingard, and several other fringe players at United should have left for the benefit of their own careers following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and others this summer.

“I’m disappointed for Jesse Lingard that he’s not left Manchester United,’ Neville told Sky Sports News on Wednesday.

“He’ll get a few games, he’ll get moments on the pitch, he’ll contribute, but I think he had something going at West Ham last year that meant Jesse Lingard in his own right was standing up as a really good player.

“To go back to being a squad player again I think, for me, is disappointing. I think you sometimes have to sort of fly the nest and go. I thought he’d already done that with what he did last year.

Nevile is of the strong belief that there are two or three players in Solskjaer’s squad who would find it extremely difficult playing this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo made his way to Manchester United on deadline day, 12 years after leaving Old Trafford.

The Portugal international left the club for Real Madrid in 2009 having spent a successful six years that saw him win the Champions League, Premier League titles and the Ballon d’Or.
