ASUU tasks National Assembly to pass bill against proliferation of state universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called on the National Assembly to as a matter of urgency pass into Law a Bill that will amend the Nigeria Universities Commission NUC Act which allows for the uncontrollable establishment of State Universities.

ASUU believes that the proliferation of state-owned Universities would only further contribute to the problems of the Nigerian University system, stressing that curtailing their proliferation will salvage the educations sector.

ASUU Chairman, Kano zone, Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad made this call at the end of the union’s meeting at the Bayero University Kano.

“We call on the national assembly to as a matter of urgency, consider and pass the bill due to bad governance and underfunding of such universities.

“State-owned universities may soon collapse beyond redemption because visitors to such universities have turned establishment as a project for appeasing electorate in their senatorial and state constituencies”.

The zonal meeting reminded the federal government to honour the agreement reached with ASUU after its nine months strike,

The union said the agreement had stipulated that the government will fund the revitalization of public universities.

“The government offered to inject thirty billion naira in a tranche of two hundred and twenty billion naira on or before 31st January 2021.

“The government also agreed to release the sum of Twenty Five Billion to universities as earned academic allowances by May 2021 as part payment of outstanding arrears”.

These issues are not yet fulfilled by the government and ASUU is patiently waiting for proper implementation.

On the issue of visitation panel to federal universities, the union noted that the panels had completed their assignments.

They urged the government to expedite action on the issuance of white paper and full implementation of the recommendation of the panel.

The union called on the stakeholders in the education sector and well-meaning Nigerians to implore the federal government to honour their agreement for the smooth continuation of the current industrial peace and harmony in Nigerian universities.
