The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has commended Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu for accepting defeat.
National Chairman, Uche Secondus also congratulated the Zambian opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema, on his victory.
Lungu and Hichilema met on Monday, hours after the opposition leader won the presidential election.
The duo agreed to work together during a parley at the home of a former leader, Rupiah Banda.
In attendance were Commonwealth Chief Observer, ex-Tanzania’s President Jakaya Kikwete and AU Chief election Observer, ex-Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma.
Secondus, in a statement, noted that the “sweet victory will help to deepen democracy in Africa”.
He praised the Zambian Electoral Commission and the security agencies for allowing the will of the people to prevail.
“This is how it should be, PDP did it in Nigeria in 2015 and stabilized our democracy”, Secondus said of Lungu’s ceding.
The PDP leader advised other African countries to “take a cue from the good news coming out of Zambian democracy”.
