Reps move to give legal backing to Amotekun, EbubeAgu

The House of Representatives has passed through second reading, a bill to allow states establish security outfits to support the police.

The constitution alteration bill, if passed, will give constitutional backing to regional security outfits like Amotekun of the South-west and Ebube Agu of the South-east.

The bill is seeking to amend sections 197, 214 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Oberuakpee Afe from Delta State, who sponsored this bill, said in his lead debate that the bill will end the multiplication of vigilante groups.

“I wish to postulate that getting the policing architecture properly covered and defined by the constitution is a lot better for our country than the Vigilante templates which are springing up in many local governments and states that is a ready recipe for collusion and conflict. It is in the light of this imperative that I invite every one of us to look at the proposed amendments thoroughly,” he said.

The bill was adopted without debate and referred to the special committee on constitution amendment.
