Children, women taken hostage as gunmen attack another Zamfara town

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked Ruwan Tofa in Maru LGA of Zamfara state.

Several persons, mostly women and children, were abducted by the gunmen who stormed the town Thursday afternoon.

Residents said the bandits also set many houses on fire before leaving.

“They came in and started shooting, and setting houses on fire,” a source disclosed.

“People started running for safety, and some of the women and children who couldn’t run were abducted by the gunmen.”

The source said the bandits had also attacked two days ago, killing at least 15 people.

Muhammed Shehu, police spokesman in the state, was not immediately available to comment on the attack.

The attack comes almost one week after hundreds of girls were abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe.

The girls were later released after four days in captivity.

Following the abduction of the Jangebe schoolgirls, the federal government had declared Zamfara a no-fly zone and banned all mining activities.
