Immortalise Lateef Jakande, rename Lagos State University to Lateef Kayode University – Muslim students demand


The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Unit on Friday urged the Lagos State Government to immortalise the deceased former Governor of the state, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, stressing that he left an indelible mark in all areas of human endeavours in the state.

While eulogising the late Jakande in a condolence message, the Muslim students asked the Lagos State government to rename the Lagos State University to the Lateef Kayode University.

Jakande, who governed Lagos State between October 1st 1979 and 31st December 1983 died on Thursday.

The Muslim students in the condolence message said Jakande left an indelible mark in the sands of time as the first civilian Governor of Lagos State and former Minister for Works and Housing,

MSSN while commiserating with the family of Jakande said the deceased laid the foundation for the modern Lagos through numerous projects.

The condolence message jointly signed by Mallam Nurudeen Yousuph (Amir, MSSN Lagos State Area Unit) Jenmi AbdulRaheem (General Secretary) and Alabidun Mahfuz (Public Relations Officer), and made available to newsmen on Friday, described Jakande as a man who lived a fulfilled life.

“Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande left an indelible mark in the San of time by being the man that laid the foundation for the modern Lagos through numerous projects and infrastructural facelift he was able to achieve in Lagos State within the 4years and 3 months he served as Executive Governor (1st Oct 1979 – 31st Dec 1983).

“Alhaji Lateef Jakande was indeed a selfless leader who used his leadership position to bring good governance to a majority of people of Lagos State with various affordable health, education, housing, water and transportation Infrastructure many of which are still existing till today.

“Notable amongst Alhaji’s numerous interventions and policies in the education sector include the construction of numerous Jakande blocks across the state primary and secondary schools, the implementation of free education policy, establishment of Lagos State University amongst others.

“It is also worthy to note that Alhaji Jakande introduced Arabic and Islamic Studies into the Lagos state primary and secondary school syllabus which is indeed a pride to behold.

“That Alhaji has lived a fulfilling and highly impactful life is incontestable as his legacies will forever live on.

“We urge the Lagos State Government to immortalise him by renaming the Lagos State University to the Lateef Kayode University.

“We pray to Almighty Allah to grant him Aljanah Firdaus and grant the family and Nigeria the fortitude to bear the loss.”
