Shehu Sani calls for calm over alleged attack on Mosque, says anarchists at work

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, has called for calm over the alleged attack on Muslim community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

While condemning the attack, he said, the development is an invitation to anarchy, urging the government and well-meaning individuals to step into the matter, saying that the country cannot afford the consequence of religious extremism at this time.

In a statement, which he personally signed and made available  in Abuja on Monday, Sani urged security agents to go after the perpetrators, adding that the government of Enugu State should rebuild the burnt mosque in the interest of peace.

He wrote: “The attacks on the Muslim Communities and the burning down of the two mosques stands condemned.

“The attacks represent a serious threat to peace and stability of the country and a grand attempt to incinerate the country.

“This act of provocation, incitement and arson must be openly and unambiguously condemned by all patriots and lovers of peace.

“The perpetrators of the hideous and heinous act must be brought to book and the State Government must ensure the mosque is rebuilt.

“Those who want to trigger a religious war in Nigeria must be resisted and combatted. Intolerance and extremism should have no place in our country.

According to him, bad elements disguised as religious fanatics were trying to cause chaos, while urging Muslim not to retaliate for any reason.

“I appeal to the Muslim community in the country not to play into the hands of anarchists and never to retaliate or take vengeance.

“Those who burnt the mosques in Nsukka were aiming to attract retaliation, inflammation, escalation and national conflagration.”
