#EndSARS: Youth member boycotts Lagos panel sitting over frozen account

The sitting of the Lagos State Panel of Judicial Inquiry probing the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate on the night of October 20 was frustrated on Saturday due to the absence of a youth member of the panel, Oluwarinu Oduala.

Oduala, who is one of the arrowheads of the #EndSARS demonstration, did not show up for the Saturday sitting in protest against the freezing of her bank account by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

NigerianEye had reported that the CBN obtained a court order freezing the accounts of 20 #EndSARS promoters till January 2021.

One of those affected was Oduala.

The order was pursuant to a motion ex parte filed by the CBN before a Federal High Court.

The chairman of the judicial panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, said the panel would have to suspend Saturday sitting as it could not form a quorum in the absence of the youth member of the panel.

  1. What is the Panel doing about what the CBN and immigration service is doing. Why should the judicial panel continue to exist when the purported conveners of the protest are being penalised without due recourse to the law. What is the rationale of the panel continuing to sit when people's accounts are being frozen and passports siezed?
When should the panel accept to operate under such an atmosphere of lawlessness? I hope the panel will not become a rubber stamp to give a colouration of justice which is being denied the youth and Nigerians. This has continued right under the nose of the panel?

  2. The panel may gain some credibility by ordering the CBN to unfreeze the Account and return passports to youth members and ensure free movement and travel until the determination of the panel. If the panel is not willing to do that or the panel lacking the power then it is baseless. That's the litmus test to determine if the panel is a cup out just to cover up. The panel should stop if they lack powers to perform and do justice.
