Kemi Lala Akindoju, a Nigerian actress, says it is unfortunate that youths have prioritised the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality TV show over issues of nation-building.
The reality TV show has continued to dominate discussions on social media platforms since it commenced on July 19.
But in a post on her social media page on Friday, the gifted actress decried the fact that youths do not usually replicate such energy and interest when it comes to elections and issues bordering on socio-economic development of the nation.
According to her, Nigeria will only make progress when citizens see the need to engage in governance. She also noted that the seeming apathy among youths for governance and electoral process poses danger to calls for good leadership in the country.
I still wish we will take our elections and holding our leaders accountable as seriously and passionately as we take big brother. I wish young people will give the same energy to register to vote when it is time. We have to do more to fight for our country.— Kemi Lala Akindoju (@lalaakindoju) August 21, 2020
“I wish young people will give the same energy to register to vote when it is time. We have to do more to fight for our country.”
Akindoju has established herself as a popular figure in the Nigerian movie industry since she kickstarted her acting career in 2005.
Her comment comes days after Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the ooni of Ife, had called for the replacement of the reality TV show, saying it is a distraction to the youths.
Elebena Chukwu, a self-acclaimed Nigerian prophet, had earlier declared that he will shut down the ongoing BBNaija with his spiritual power if the federal government fails to do so.
