Kano State House of Assembly may
approve the request for the creation of four new Emirates, a development that
would reduce the powers of Emir Lamido Sanusi.
When the request is made a law
and signed by Governor Umar Ganduje, the 4 new Emirates – Bichi, Gaya, Karaye
and Rano – will no longer be under the Emir’s control.
The People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) lawmakers had kicked against the move, stating that it was a political
move against the Emir.
But on Tuesday, the assembly
received a report from its joint committees on Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs and Judiciary after considering a petition for upgrading some
traditional rulers to first class emirs.
Majority Leader, Baffa Babba
Danagundi (Kano Municipal), presented the report which was unanimously endorsed
by all the members present at the plenary when the Speaker Kabiru Alhassan
Rurum, tabled it.
It subsequently passed first
reading unopposed and may pass second and third readings today.
A member told Daily Trust that
the Assembly was set to forward it to the state governor Abdullahi Ganduje for
his assent.
“I can assure you, we are going
to finish everything Wednesday and after passing the bill into law, we will
send same to the governor.
“We are lucky that the report of
the joint committees of the House on Local Government and chieftaincy Affairs
and Judiciary has taken care of more than 95 per cent of the work even before
this development come up,” he said.
Although the new petition to
break the Kano emirate council was signed by Mallam Ibrahim Salisu Chamber on
behalf of the African Institute for Legal Aid (WAILA), it is widely believed
that Governor Ganduje sponsored it.
Sources say Ganduje is angry that
the Emir Sanusi supported Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governorship candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supported by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the
last governorship election.
